'Funky' hair salon defends hijab policy

A Windsorite who owns a cutting-edge London, England hair salon says a lawsuit against her, for not hiring a hijab-wearing Muslim, will bankrupt her if it's successful.

Sarah DesRosiers, who runs Wedge hair salon, is being sued by Bushra Noah, 19. Noah, a Muslim, said she was a victim of discrimination after failing to land a job at the salon.

DesRosiers said she wasn't being discriminatory. She said Noah, who refused to remove her headscarf, wasn't right for the job because she needs employees to show off their "funky" hairstyles to the public.

Movie Review: 'The Kite Runner'

Marc Forster ("Stranger Than Fiction," "Finding Neverland"), one of our most reliable directors of late, starts this emotionally stifling drama of omission and fight for redemption with a box kite flapping in the stiff San Francisco wind of 2000.

Afghan-in-exile Amir (Khalid Abdalla), who has spent the past 20 years or so in the Bay Area, has a beautiful wife. Yet he looks as if he's carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders.

When David Benioff's screenplay, adapted from Khaled Hosseini's 2003 novel, flashes back to Kabul of the late 1970s, it isn't long before we begin to understand why.

Friend's Name

I simply think this article is complete garbage, symptomatic of the overt politicization of academics that has undermined this school and many others. The jargon about "spaces" and "frameworks" and all the other claptrap is straight out of the seminars in HGS and exemplifies the groupthink that makes all this possible, so I pointed it out. That is not attacking a person. It used to be called vigorous debate, the marketplace of ideas, all that good stuff. But I suppose today the only thing that matters is whether or not someone may be "offended" so we should all just tone it the hell down, huh?

For what it's worth, I think you make a lot of good points in your 4:22 post, most of which I agree in full.

Police give tips on avoiding burglaries during holidays

Police say people should be careful during the holidays to avoid tempting burglars and other thieves. Beth Stevenson, New Bern police spokeswoman, said homeowners should be careful in displaying expensive gifts and decorations. "It is enticing for would-be burglars," Stevenson said. She said people should not leave empty boxes that contained expensive items such as electronics or computers at curbside for pickup. Stevenson suggests breaking down the boxes and putting them in garbage bags or taking them to a recycling center. In 2006, four robberies were reported in New Bern in December, along with 25 burglaries, 133 larcenies and three auto thefts. Diane Miller, Havelock public information coordinator, also has some tips. She suggests that dog owners not discourage their pooches from barking when strangers approach their home.

Come 2008, hi-tech traffic surveillance on city roads will make the task difficult for car thieves.

For, closed-circuit television, equipped with special software enabling them to track stolen vehicles by their number, will be installed at 20 major traffic intersections in the city by March-end.

It will be part of various modernisation plans initiated by the Chandigarh police to make the force more efficient and transparent in its functioning, said S.K. Jain, UT inspector-general of police, today while sharing his plans for the next year.

A control room will be set up at the Traffic Police Lines, Sector 29, where a computer will monitor violations and issue challan after taking picture of the offending vehicle.

However, staff shortage and health of the force are an immediate cause for concern for the police, casting adverse affect on its functioning.
